Episode 7 - Our Best and Funniest Travel Stories (to date)

Updated: Sep 23, 2020

From epic and embarrassing travel stories, to the funny things we get up to in guiding, Episode 7 is sure to get you laughing. Taryn and Marissa share some funny moments, as well as their favourite program bits that you might not think are program but definitely can be! We also talk about Canadian comedian and YouTuber, Lilly Singh, who spreads lots of love and laughter herself. We round off the night with a rendition of Pink Pajamas; a classic campfire song that everyone in Guiding should know.

Our Stories

If you're a Girl Guide, then it's almost certain that you have your own collection of great stories that have come from moments of laughter, terror, or embarrassment with your guiding sisters. We share some of our own stories in this episode, but to truly get the most out of them you need to listen to the epic retellings firsthand.

What stories can you recall from your Guiding trips? Did you ever tip a fellow guide out of your canoe? Or forget to pack your raincoat for camp? Maybe you got stuck in the mud, or unknowingly got caught in the middle of a storm! We'd love to hear your stories. Share them with us in the comments below, or send us an email.

This is program... right?

If there's one thing we know how to do, it's how to have fun! We're also great at improvising, which is how many of the following program activities have come to be.

They may sound goofy and completely ridiculous, but believe it or not these activities have lead to many great memories and laughter from the girls, AND they count as program work! You'll be surprised to find out just what you can do to earn your badges.

  • Barbie goes camping (dress her up, make her a shelter, and use tampons and a plastic bag to make her a waterproof bedroll! Bonus points if you test your bedrolls in some water!)

  • Cook a three course dinner

  • Play classic video games

  • Have a spa night

  • Have a burping contest; experiment with drinks that make you belch!

  • Put up your tent without the poles (Bonus points if you sleep in it overnight!)

  • Whittle some spears and capture the great potato fish (Bonus point if you cook them for one of your meals!)

Lilly Singh: Girl Bawse

If you're Canadian, then you likely will have heard of Lilly Singh. She got a start on her career in entertainment through YouTube, under the name "||Superwoman||". She quickly gained attention and views for her sketch-comedy style videos where she did impersonations of her fictional parents and frequently collaborated with other stars in the business. She's also a New York Times bestselling author for her self-help book, How to be a Bawse: A Guide to Conquering Life. And the best thing about Lilly? She was a former Girl Guide! Although there's not a lot of information about her guiding history in Canada, we do know that she has done a lot of social good through her work with WE Day and her campaign, #GirlLove.

Lilly also celebrated the start of her late-night talk show, A Little Late with Lilly Singh, this past September. She is the first openly bisexual person, as well as the first person of Indian and South Asian descent, to host a major American network late-night talk show. Can you tell that we're proud of this Canadian girl "bawse"?!

Campfire: Pink Pajamas

If you've ever been to a guiding campfire, then you will certainly know Pink Pajamas. It's goofy, but also a classic. In guiding, naturally we teach this song to Sparks because it has the word 'pink' in it. It's also because they're five, six, and seven year-olds who will get a kick out of singing the words "tooshie-wooshie"!

I wear my pink pajamas in the summer when it’s hot,

I wear my flannel nighties in the winter when it’s not,

and sometimes in the springtime,

and sometimes in the fall,

I jump into my little bed with nothing on at all.

That’s the time you aught to see me,

That’s the time you aught to see me,

That’s the time you aught to see me,

When I jump into my little bed with nothing on at all.

Nosy nosy what’s it to ya?

Nosy nosy what’s it to ya?

Nosy nosy what’s it to ya?

When I jump into my little bed with nothing on at all.

Additional Verses:

I wake up in the morning with my pillow on my head,

My little tooshie wooshie just a hangin’ out of bed,

And 3 times out of 4,

I end up on the floor,

That’s why I don’t drink Coca-Cola before bedtime anymore.

Woo!

I wear my pink bikini in the summer when its hot I wear my speedo swimsuit in the winter when its not And sometimes in the spring time and sometimes in the fall I jump into my swimming pool with nothing on at all.
