Episode 17 - Oh Canada!

Updated: Sep 23, 2020

In a slightly early celebration of Canada Day, we are talking about the history of Girl Guides in Canada!

Founded on September in 1910, the Canadian Girl Guides Association got its start with Mary Malcolmson who organized the first Canadian Girl Guides Company in St. Catharines, Ontario. Officially, the Canadian Government passed an Act of Parliament approving the Constitution of the Canadian Girl Guides Association in 1917 and Canadian Girl Guides grew bigger from there!

In 1927, the organization held its first national camp in British Columbia, and Girl Guides of Canada was a charter member when WAGGGS formed a year later in 1928. Since then, we've seen the creation of the Sparks, Pathfinder, Ranger, and Link branches. The Girl Guides of Canada have also held many international camps, including one in Cape Breton in 1977, Echo Valley International Camp in Saskatchewan in 1988, and several Canadian Mosaics in the Yukon, Manitoba, New Brunswick, and Ontario!

We also learn some counting in SWAGGYK with Feist, a Canadian singer/songwriter who you likely know from an old iPod nano commercial.

Born on February 13, 1976 in Amherst, Nova Scotia, Leslie Feist spent most of her teenage years growing up in Calgary singing in local choirs. She played in a punk band called Placebo and won her high school's Battle of the Bands. After touring with the band until she lost her voice, Feist took some much needed rest before returning as a solo artist.

It wasn't until her fourth album was released, that she became a household name. The album itself took off later in the year of its release, after the single "1234" was used in an Apple iPod nano commercial, causing her to gain “superstar” fame.

Read more about Feist on the Canadian Encyclopedia, Arts & Crafts, and All Music.

And to wrap up our Canada Day episode, we chose a very Canadian song - Land of the Silver Birch.
