Episode 13 - Let's go to London

Updated: Sep 23, 2020

Come join us as we travel to the second World Centre - Pax Lodge in London, UK! Learn about its long history and reincarnations.

We also talk leadership for program this week and do a quick overview of what leadership is and how to help girls grow.

For She Was a Girl Guide You Know, we talk about race-car driver Susie Wolff, someone to get you excited about open-wheel racing!

Susie, from Oban, Scotland, began her racing streak early. As a child, she and her brother would race with go-karts and by the age of 14 Susie was named the “British Woman Kart racing driver of the year”! She moved through the Scottish and British intercontinental championships as a teenager, and then into entry level motor racing in 2001. By 2005, Susie started in the British F3, a time during which she fought stereotypes as a lone female driver in the league.

In 2012, she was named a development driver for Williams Formulas One team. Susie was the first women to participate in a F1 weekend since 1992 when she drove 2 practice sessions at the British and German Grand Prix. By Fall of 2015, Susie decided to hang up her racing wheel citing she felt like she went as far as she could:

"I never let my gender define me but in my whole driving career I only ever did one interview not being asked about being a female," she says. "The frustrating thing is I’m always asked the same questions but I’m not judged [in my work] on how good a mother I am, if I’m a good wife - I’m judged on how well the team performs."

If you want to learn more about Susie's journey in the racing world, read about her profile on The Gentle Woman and watch the documentary Driven - The Faster Woman in the World (produced by her brother) available for free on Vimeo!

To wrap up with Campfire, we talk about the Pax Lodge song and how it came to be.

We hope this episode inspires you to visit Pax Lodge some day, or to pursue a career in a male-dominated industry, no matter the obstacles!
